Q: Could ActoPlusMet cause or aggrevate upper respiratory symptoms??

My husband had been taking Metformin for about five years for Diabetes, now suddenly a couple of months ago they switched him to ActoPlusMet and he's been coughing and wheezing ever since.

He is convinced this new medication is the trigger.  We've both had bronchitis in the past, but he hasnt those symptoms in a long while, and this is different he says. He feels the impact at the bottom of his throat, rather than his chest, when trying to inhale deeply he coughs instead during these spells.  A dry hacking cough.

Some adverse effect that have been attributed to Actos are cold-like symptoms, headache, sinus infection, muscle pain, tooth disorder and sore throat. In my opinion, these tend to be generic adverse events that occur in most drugs trials, but the pharm company is required by law to report them. Understandably it could be any number of things.  Definately keep a close eye on it, and tell your doctor what you observe.  The problem is that Actos takes anywhere from 4-6 weeks to get working, and when you cease taking Actos, due to gene transcription, it's effects can still be seen for up to 6 months.  So, if it is the Actos that is causing the coughing and wheezing, it might not necessarily stop right after discontinueing the medication.  Actos is the most studied and arguably the most well rounded type 2 diabetes drug on the market today.  Although, it is not for everyone; it can be extremely helpful in your longterm battle against type 2 diabetes.  My only advice is to be vigilant and tell your doctor of any changes. Take care.
