Q: Diabetic blood sugar levels vs. "Normal" folks' levels.

Hi Diabetes Central,

I'm a recently diagnosed (end of '07) type 2 Diabetic who went through Diabetes school, (as per my Dr. ) watch what I eat, (mostly), take my meds, exercise regularly, and check my sugars 3-6 times a day.

I'm wondering... what are "normal" folks blood sugars levels throughout the day as compared to Diabetic levels?  I have my little list of "Blood Sugar Goals" that I keep all over the house and carry with me, and I'm almost always within those ranges, but I want to know...what do those ranges look like for non-Diabetics?  I need a basis for comparison.  Thanks so much!

Hi Michele,

I believe an established "normal" blood sugar would be around 80-90 mg/dl upon waking in the morning.  Typical one hour postprandial (after meal) blood sugars for non-diabetics would be 100-120 mg/dl.

Perhaps one of the medical professional experts can shed more light on your question.

If your concern is how close to "normal" your blood sugars are, you may want to ask your doctor to clarify your goals and how they were determined.

Good luck!

Normal blood sugar for non diabetics is 70-99 upon waking and 100-130 2 hours after a meal.

Thank you for posting this. My doctor and the nutritionist said to stay under 180 postprandial... so I was thinking that "normal" people were up to that level. I had no idea how low they were actually staying. This definitely gives me a better idea of what my sugars are doing and how ineffectual my own system is reacting. It also gives me an idea of how much more I need to strive to do better. Wow! Eye opening!

Shouldn't the docs be telling diabetics to stay more around the 100-130 range after eating then?

if you are eating much in the way of carbs/sugars

you have little hope of keeping it that low.  if you

low carb, very low carb (VLC) or even zero carb (ZC)

diet you can stay in the normal level all day - at

least some people can, who knows if it works for

everyone...
