Q: Is there a Diabetic advocate in Oregon that can help a patient work better with their doctors?

In 2010, I had severe flares up, hyperglycemia and loss about 1.5 months.  My doctor gave me temporary authorization to excuse me from work, yet she refused to sign FMLA paperwork that would have protect me from my job and allow me to have short term disability.

Since December, I became insulin dependent.  My Diabetes was controlled for a couple of weeks, but became uncontrolled with the added stress from the desservice from my medical provider.

I requested Intermittent FMLA for 2011, for flare ups and medical visits, as a PREVENTION, to have them ONLY in case I need them.  The doc refused.

I feel my doctor does not really understand the impact of uncontrolled Diabetes, and the HMO plan refuses to have me be followed by an Endocrinologist.  In my opinion, my doc does not care enough about me as a patient, to help me out with the FMLA paperwork.  She does not get it, she bluntly refuses to understand that there are days I cannot function.

Is there Legal Diabetics Advocates in Oregon that can help a Diabetic patient work better with their medical providers?

Living with diabetes certainly it's easy and have a the right support is a huge benefit and motivation!

for help finding local information on your rights to have FMLA, I would contact ADA.  for finding out who are the doctors who advocate for their patients, you may want to find a local diabetes support group to talk with others who live with diabetes and see what they have to share.  That's how I found my doctor was through a local support group.

Not sure if you are located in Portland area or somewhere else, but here are some links:

ADA has two offices in Oregon, Portland and Eugene

Insulin Dependent Diabetes Support Group

Defeat Diabetes, list of support groups throughout Oregon
