Q: I gained 20 pounds in two months when put back on insulin after several years. What's going on here

I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 10 years ago.  I started on pills (not metformin) but eventually went to Humulin N for several years.  I began crashing off and on and was taken off of insulin and put back on pills.  In this time I gained over 50 pounds...a large part due to insulin.  When Byetta came along it was a lifesaver, along with metformin, since I still produce sufficient insulin.  I lost over 60 pounds, my blood pressure came down, I felt great.  Then one morning I woke up with numb fingers and a glucose reading of 500 +.  I was immediately put back on insulin and in a little over 2 months gained 20 pounds, and my glucose bounced around between 170 and 300 + from day to day.  Plus, I began crashing.  My blood pressure went up.  My doctor put me back on Byetta and a combination Januvia/Metformin pill.  My weight has started to drop, but my glucose reading is still bouncing.  Will this smooth out over time?  I bought a home gym and plan to increase my exercise routine considerably.  What else can I do to stay on Byetta and smooth out my glucose readings...and why are they bouncing so?

Woodsfox- Hello! I know I have gained weight since starting the pump in May. I know mines is due to knowing I have insulin to cover what I eat. I can honestly say I had a lot better control when I was on the pill. Have you changed your eating habits? That could be the issue. You may have to increase exercise and lower the amount of carbs you are eating. I am battling the same issue and I am trying to fit it. I am right a long with you. Cherise Community Moderator Reply
