    Why does my blood sugar spike when I eat raw oats or oatmeal?Diane

    I am trying to get my type 2 diabetes and cholesterol under control. If you could explain why my blood sugar shoots over 200 when I eat raw oatmeal I would be very thankful. I walk about 2 miles a day and exercise in the mornings then after that I eat the oatmeal and my blood sugar shoots up.

    I'm a type 2 Diabetic too.  I have the same problem with Oatmeal.  My experience shows that fiber and blood sugar are not correlated.  It is marketing fluff.  My blood sugar goes way over 200 whether it is raw or cooked.  Even if I melt cottage cheese (protein) into the oatmeal to offset the glycemic impact I still peg my blood sugar.  Stay away from Oatmeal or any cereal for that matter.  I suggest sweet potato measured in 1/2 oz portions...that works for me.   Take the time to weigh your starchy carbs and measure the impact of starchy carbs on your blood sugar an hour or 2 after eating them...this will help you determine the size of the portion to moderate its impact on your blood sugar or whether its worth feeling terrible after eating it ...I decided not to eat rice, pasta, bread, or potato because of its impact on my blood sugar...don't believe the ADA recommendations for diet if you want to control your BS...if you'd like some more ideas...let me know...Good Luck!   The only way to permanently eliminate your Type 2 Diabetes is by WEIGHT LOSS, EXERCISE, AND FOOD CHOICE !!!!   You can get off the meds...did your Doctor mention that by chance?  I've lost 40lbs and cut my meds in half...I'm on my way to total freedom from this dreaded disease...hope you are too!       I have the same problem. It does not matter if I eat oatmeal, or a slice or two of whole grain bread with eggs and skim milk. It spikes my sugar. I am type 2. There is a book I read when I first started about a diet that will cure diabetes. I lost 15 pounds in the diet and I did really well. But one I thought I was cured I screwed up by going back to the same old kid like diet.  Anyway,  I quit taking metformin a day ago because I believe I can manage this without meds again. The problem is that I am still hungry unless I eat something filling like bread. One doctor told me once in the ER that it is ok if your level spikes high for a little bit as long as it goes back down within a few hours. Any random blood sugar over 200 is considered a diagnosis for diabetes.  If I drink lots of water and snack on some cashews that usually helps get it down. The funny thing is--- when my level goes over 200. I really do feel a off or even kinda sickly and not myself. Doctors tell me that most people can not tell if their sugar is high but I really do feel sick. The weirdest thing is that I am 6ft 206lbs. I am athletic built. I am not a diabetic canadate---I think I have it only because I inherited it.

      Falconfriend...is the book you read "Reversing Diabetes"?  Just curious!  Any starchy carb I consume has a double edged impact on my blood surgar.  Starchy carbs (bread, oatmeal, rice, pasta...etc) and satisfies my crave, but only momentarily.  Once the sudden spike in sugar is over I crash and feel terrible.  This sugar rush then subsides into further craving.  It puts a wobble on BS stability which takes hours to bring back to normal levels.

       

      Unfortunately, the ER Doctor you spoke with doesn't understand.  Prolonged high BS conflicts with the goal of normal BS levels.  I find no value in allowing my BS to soar. It merely reminds me of my malady.  I suggest you consider 2 goals.  Consume only foods that support stable BS levels and eliminate BS spikes as possible.

       

      I've tried eliminating my medicine too and managing it by diet alone.  It was very difficult and took 2 weeks for me to stabilize my sugars.  I suggest you find a Doctor that understands Type 2 Diabetes and work with him to better understand the cause of your diabetes.  This insight would empower you to better manage your sugars.  There is more that one cause for Type 2 Diabetes.  What combination of attributes impacts your BS?  Answering this question would help!

      I am in that pre-diabetic range so trying to avoid becomming diabetic. I just discovered that oatmeal is spiking my blood glucose levels in the 200 ranges. Even the steel cut oats are doing this. I really love eating oatmeal too. It is my favorite breakfast cereal. Does oatmeal typically do this to everyone?

    I know oats and grains have a low GI however you need to also look at how many carbs a serving has. I have a high/normal blood sugar so I'm not diabetic but I still get diabetic level spikes after I eat and am on track for type II if I don't eat properly now so my doctor and dietician told me to not eat any grains, starches, or beans. I personally substitue quinoa for oatmeal and love it. If you're going to eat oatmeal, or other grains, balancing your carbs with healthy fats like whole milk and protein actually slows down your digestion of the carbs so that there isn't a big spike in your blood sugar levels. I am not on medication or anything, just watching my portions and balancing my meals and exercising. Try whole milk and a couple of eggs with your oatmeal and see if that helps. You want an equal amount of fat,protein, and carbs in every meal so you may end up with a smaller portion of the oatmeal in order to balance.
