Does the South Beach Diet really work?

I have heard a lot of people recommend the South Beach Diet for weight loss, and the book says that it was developed as a "diabetes diet." Will the diet really help lower my risk for diabetes?Has anyone had luck lowering their numbers with the South Beach Diet?
