(Page 2)

You’ll soon be able to give the carbohydrate count on most commonly eaten foods and you will learn how insulin works in your body.  It may seem daunting now, but you can and will master this new world of diabetes, then you can live your life to the fullest.

To Parent of a recently diagnosed child.

I’m so sorry that diabetes has invaded your home and family.  You will rise to the occasion. You will set the tone with your child so that diabetes becomes a manageable part of everyday life.  Do not be stopped in your pursuit of knowledge about the diabetes but take a deep breath before you start to lecture about the disease to your child.  Never lose site of the child and who they were yesterday and who they still are today, despite the diabetes.

--Kim Benjet, caregiver of son Josh, type 1
