Cholesterol drug cuts amputation risk for diabetics

The cholesterol drug fenofibrate (Tricor/Lofibra) appears to reduce the risk of amputations for diabetics, scientists say. In one five-year study of 9,795 diabetics, researchers found that the risk of first amputation for those those who took fenofibrate was 36 percent lower than for people who took a placebo. The drug was most likely to reduce the need for toe and foot amputations, the study suggests. Read more »
