The General Accountability Office (GAO) is warning consumers that home DNA kits that claim to give information about a person's risk for diabetes, cancer, and other diseases may deliver medically unproven or ambiguous results. The GAO issued the warning after it sent two DNA samples--one from an adult employee and one from an infant--to a home-testing company under 14 phony names. The GAO received 14 vastly different medical profiles from only two people's DNA.
