5-20 mcU/mL while fasting; normal ranges may differ by the laboratory of the health care provider.

Note: mcU/mL = micro unit per milliliter


What abnormal results mean

Greater-than-normal levels may indicate:

  • Insulinoma
  • Type 2 diabetes mellitus
  • Obesity
  • Injection of an excessive amount of insulin
  • Sulfonylurea-induced hypoglycemia

Lower-than-normal levels may indicate:

  • Diabetes, type 1 or 2
