A large study designed to aggressively lower the blood sugar of
Type 2 diabetics has been halted due to an unusual number of
deaths. Federal officials say that 257 of the study participants
died, compared with 203 patients who were receiving standard
treatment. Study participants were given high doses of current
diabetes medications that lowered their blood sugar levels below
current guidelines. Researchers believed that this drastic
reduction would help patients avoid cardiovascular disease, but
instead the aggressive treatment may have increased their risk of
death. The reason for the increased risk is still unclear, but
experts say it does not appear to be linked to any specific
diabetes medication.
