Most people have heard of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes, but new
research suggests there may be other types as well. These
single-gene subtypes--which researchers call MODY--appear to arise
when only one gene goes awry, rather than a group of genes.
Researchers say these subtypes may help explain some
difficult-to-explain diabetes cases, such as when a young, thin
person suddenly develops diabetes. Or it may help explain why
people with similar risk factors for the disease develop very
different diabetes symptoms.
