Babies who are exposed to their mother's obesity and diabetes while
in the womb have a higher chance of developing Type 2 diabetes in
their teens, new research suggests. Investigators studied 79 young
people who'd been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes before age 20 and
compared them to 120 non-diabetic youth. They found that 30 percent
of the diabetics were exposed to the disease in the womb, versus
only 6 percent of the non-diabetics. And 57 percent of the
diabetics had been exposed to obesity in utero, versus 27 percent
of the teens who did not have the disease.
