Too much, too little sleep linked to inflammation

People who sleep too much or too little are at risk for disease, and new research suggests that inflammation may be the link. A study published in the journal Sleep found that most patients slept about 7.6 hours per night. For every hour more slept, researchers found an eight-percent increase in C-reactive protein levels and a seven-percent increase in interleukin-6. While for every hour less slept researchers found an 8-percent increase in tumor necrosis factor, another inflammatory marker. Researchers also found that reduced sleep was associated with an increased risk of diabetes, hypertension, and sleep apnea.
