Fructose-sweetened drinks up metabolic syndrome risk

U.S. researchers say that drinks sweetened with fructose increase belly fat and insulin resistance in overweight people. In a recent study, scientists randomly assigned 32 overweight men and women to drink three daily servings of a glucose or fructose-sweetened beverage for 10 weeks. After the 10 weeks, both groups had gained a similar amount of weight, but the group who had consumed fructose products showed more belly fat, as well as signs of insulin resistance.
