Type of insurance affects weight-loss surgery outcome

Patients who have private insurance appear to lose more weight after bariatric surgery than patients who have Medicare insurance, researchers have found. The study of 750 weight-loss surgery patients found that patients who had Medicare lost 57 percent of their extra weight, while those with private insurance lost approximately 82 percent of their extra weight. Experts say the study participants who were on Medicare were much more overweight in general than the participants who had their own insurance. And they suggest that the disparity between the groups may be linked to the fact that some Medicare patients could be starting their weight-loss journey with more profound medical problems and other disadvantages.
