Wal-Mart, online pharmacies top affordable drug list: ADA

A study discussed at the American Diabetes Association meeting suggests that patients who do their research on finding the least expensive meds may save thousands of dollars per year. The study's data found that mail-order retailers such as Medco by Mail, and large warehouses such as Wal-Mart were able to offer diabetes drugs at much lower prices than most local or chain drug stores. Researchers compared prices of the most often prescribed medications such as Metformin, Lipitor, Avandia, Actos, Zocor, Lantus, and Prinivil, and found that the price differences between pharmacies was dramatic. Metformin, for example, sold for $4 at Wal-Mart, but cost $39.99 at the Rite Aid chain.
