Diabetics who have even one episode of very low blood sugar during a hospital stay may have an increased risk of dying, researchers say. A study of 2,600 diabetics found that each day that a patient had hypoglycemia (less than 50 mg/dl) was associated with an 85 percent risk of death while still in the hospital. That risk carried over even after patients left the hospital, with patients experiencing a 66 percent increased risk of death in the year after being discharged.
