Scientists ID gene responsible for insulin resistance

A study of the DNA of more than 14,000 people has led to the discovery of a gene that scientists believe controls the way the body responds to insulin. The discovery could lead to a breakthrough in the way diabetes is treated, researchers say. The mutated gene--called called insulin receptor substrate 1, or IRS1--appears to control the way cells absorb glucose from the blood and use it to generate energy.
