Many health experts say that adding a 1 cent tax on every ounce of soda would help stem the rise of obesity, and add 14.9 billion dollars for public health funding in America. Researchers writing in the New England Journal of Medicine say that the soda tax would deter people from drinking high-sugar drinks, while it helped local and state governments at the same time. The United States spends 147 billion dollars per year on health costs associated with obesity, researchers point out. They also note that an added tax has helped reduce cigarette and alcohol use.
