The diabetes drug liraglutide may help obese people shed more weight than the weight-loss drug orlistat (Xenical, Alli). In a recent study, researchers found that obese patients with pre-diabetes lost almost twice as much weight at the highest doses as patients taking orlistat. It also lowered blood pressure at all doses, researchers say. Liraglutide was approved for sale in Europe in July 2009 under the name Victoza, but is still awaiting U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval.
