The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved Victoza for the treatment of Type 2 diabetes in patients who do not respond well to other treatments. The drug faced delays in 2009 after the FDA determined that the drug increased the risk of pancreatitis. The FDA has approved the medication, but it is requiring the drugmaker to do a five-year study to evaluate other risks, such as thyroid cancer, pancreatitis, and allergic reactions. Drugmaker Novo Nordisk also hopes Victoza will be approved as an obesity medication.
