Intensive Diabetes Treatment May Hurt Heart, Help Eyes

Intense efforts to lower blood sugar, cholesterol, and blood pressure does not lower the risk of heart disease in older diabetics, experts say, but it does lower the risk of eye disease and kidney problems. The study of 10,251 older patients was stopped temporarily in 2008 when researchers found that those whose blood sugar was dropped aggressively were more likely to die than those who had a more conservative treatment. But they also found that it did help prevent diabetic retinopathy and kidney function.
