One of the longest-running trials to pit Atkins-style low-carbohydrate diets against low-fat diets found that low-carb may be the most heart-friendly. Participants in both diet camps lost roughly the same amount of weight after two years, and both groups improved their heart disease risk factors, but those who had cut out refined sugars, white flour, and other high-carbohydrate foods showed the greatest increase in "good" HDL cholesterol.
