    Joan,

    Impressive fitness for your age - well done!

    Yes, it's hard to stay motivated about exercise when you really don't like it all that much. I think we all can relate. I've found it good to have an exercise partner or friend. You keep each other focused and it makes exercising much more fun!

    As far as your arthritis, have you tried or considered water exercise? This type of exercise is much easier on joints and muscles, and being in the water adds more resistance to your exercise efforts so you just might not have to "hit the pool" quite as often. Give it a try. Also see "Exercise's Effects on Bones and Muscles" at http://www.healthcentral.com/diabetes/exercise-000029_5-145.html. Helpful information. Best of luck to you. Keep moving!

  2. Good For You!

    Hi, You really look great, and should be thankful! At our age (I am 70) it is really hard to lose weight. I used to be a size 6-8, when I was in my fifties, but something happened and I am now a size 12. I have to say, sweets, are one of the reason's I can't lose the weight. I now weigh 147 and am only 5' 2".

    So, do "you" have any advice for me?

    Sincerely,

    Helen

    Helen, you're so right! At our age it's hard to lose those pounds. I would like to weight 110 because I have a very small frame, 5 foot 2 like you, but all my weight it right in my middle and it drives me crazy. Thinking about a tummy tuck. If I was really serious about losing the extra pounds, I'd give up wine with dinner (and the coctails too, too many useless calories), I'd give up white flour, and I'd practice portion control of meals. And most importantly, I'd walk at least 2 miles at least 3 times a week.

    It's a stuggle and I wish you luck. It's not too late for you to get back to you're fighting weight. Just do it! I'm 5 years past you and it gets harder and harder. The main thing is to be able to feel good about yourself.

    Best wishes, Joan Bush

    Yes, thanks for the advice! Joan! I went over to my daughter's house, yesterday, and went swimming in her pool. Hope to do it more often, I felt so good, after all the exercize and justr a fun time with my daughter and her husband. However, this morning when I got on the scale, I had not lost a pound. Maybe it will show up tommorow.

    Forgot to say, I am sorry to hear about your husband bad health! And God bless you both! You might say I am on a mission (and/or a caregiver. My husband and I (he is 74) have moved to SC to let our grandson go to the school he likes. It has really been trying, for us (he is a teenager). He will graduate next year.

    Best,

    Helen

    Hi Joan, if you need to be motivated, you have at least two powerful reasons: your own health for its own sake, and the need for your spouse. The following will help:

    1. Yoga. Gentle and graded, mainly those postures and movements lying on your back;
    2. Treadmill and gentle weight training (both by way of maintenance);
    3. Water exercises;
    4. Meditation;
    5. Positive thinking;
    6. Active lifestyle;
    7. Right type of food, at the right (4-5) times a day;
    8. Enough rest.

    Best wishes,
    Haresh.

    A great friend of my has had arthritis in her hands for years. Along with her meds she has found if she takes 4 codliver oil tablets with a half glass of milk before bed she has no pain. Give it a try for a month and see if that helps you. Her doctor can't believe she no longer has pain. Tablets can be bought at WalMart and are really cheap. Good luck, hope it helps you as it did her. Diane

    Hi Helen,

    Remember the old saying handling things you can control, not worrying about things you cannot control and the wisdome to know the differnece?

    You need to wise up Helen. Size 8 is by all means totally acceptable. There is no need for you to want to be the size you were when you were 50 or worse when you were 30.

    So sell or donate all your size 6 clothes and replace them with one for 5 or 7 size 8 very favorite clothes.  Just as you would get a baby sitter when you have kids, look at your going to gym and other activities as a rest from caring for your husband. Find a friend and go to the Gym together. Also take some relaxing and yoga courses if they are available there if not change Gyms.

    You only have 25 years more to go, so enjoy it rather than worry about older clothes. This will automatically energize you and take you out of depressing thoughts and sighs.
