Finding out about diabetes 2. I know I need to lose weight. But when I go on a diet,or a doctor's tells me that I cannot eat sugars or high carb. I am desireing more. I need some more dealtales. about the meal exchanges and how to have fun exerciseing. when I am out of breath going to the car port. I have always thought that gaining weight is the way most people do as they age.

To Kay

I too was diagnosed 3 years ago with Diabetes 2.  I needed to lose weight as I am 5'2" and weighed close to 190 lbs.  I declined the medication and asked the dr if I could try bringing my glucose down by exercise and diet.  I lost 32 lbs. and this is how I did it.  I didn't cut out all carbs.  You are right you will crave them and then overindulge.  I switched to an artificial sweetner (Splenda) first of all.  I cooked my spaghetti really al dente.  I couldn't give up my pasta!!  And most of all I walked every day.  Start out with 15 or 20 minutes a day of whatever you can do.  If you can't do much do it twice a day.  Believe me I hate any form of exercise, even walking but I made myself do it.  My eyes were getting a little blurred and I heard you could very well lose your eyesight it you aren't careful.  I wanted to see my grandchildren grow up so that scared me.  Don't beat youself up if you fall off once in a while.  My nutritionist said that if you go to a party eat what you want and then go right back on your diet the next day.  Good luck.

I am a type 2. I used to think age was the reason why I was gaining so much weight until I started caring about myself again, and decided to go back to WW. Weight Watchers is my lifesaver. I also see a nutritionist.

Anyway, I lost 17 pounds the first time with WW then quit and gained back more than twice as much; lost 43 pounds the second time; and then, because of a medication that causes weight gain, I gained weight again--17 pounds, and finally lost 12 pounds in 2.5 years. I really don't ever want to regain again.

I feel better. I look better. I move better. I'm happier and have more energy now. Plus, I can wear anything I want in my closet again.

I have neighbors who are overweight or obese in their senior years. Their mobility and lives are limited. I don't want to be like them.

Wishing you good health.

PS: WW is not about deprivation or exclusion of food groups, which is just one reason why I love it so.

Ok.. I was diagnosed with Type 2 Jun 23, 2009. To be honest it probably was the best thing to happen to me. Since I was 5'10 and 282. I was eating everything and anything I could and had I not been diagnosed I'd most likely would have keeled over with a heartattack or something as serious in a few years.

Good new. You can get control over your life.

My Dr. Started me on a Mediteranean Diet. This is not a tastless bland and unappealing diet. Its more of a food modification program. That and exercise I dropped from 282 to 233 (as of today) shooting for 190's. I do exercise. I walk every morning and about 3-4 times a week a mile in the evening. get yourself a MP3 player with your favorite music on it and start walking. you don't have to to 10 miles, start out going up the block and back. Then around the block (when your ready) the more you do the more you will want to do. That MP3 player will get you round the block without all the thinking about how much it hurts or how hard I'm breathing. If you city has a community center it may also have a fitness for seniors program that might help.

DIET. Check out the mediterranean diet online. I find it was perfect for me.

The most important thing is that you need to change you mentality about food. When someone says comfort food to you, that is just a key word for BATTERED/FRIED/STARCHY/HI CARBS etc.. I'll be honest if a diet was tasteless and boring I wouldn't be on it very long. The Mediterranean Diet not tasteless or bland.

Of course if you don't cook its more difficult to follow, but if you do..WOW..what a new world of food to explore. there is a book called "Eating The Greek Way" that is very informative and has about 100 recipes most of are EXCEPTIONAL!!!  try that out.
