L-arginine and high blood pressure

By zygo Wednesday, March 14, 2007

Thru regular exercise (4xweek) I have cut my blood pressure medication in half.  My workouts, from the beginning in August, have been fairly intense.  I recently have started taking 3400mg of L-arginine before weight lifting and I've noticed that my blood pressure seems to be dropping again.  My body fat (water tank) is 15.6%.  I am 59 years old, 5'09", 183 lbs.

Is there a relationship between the L-arginine and my BP, or is it simply a conincidence due to the continued progression with my physical fitness regimen?  My routine is 7 minutes of cardial, weights for about 1 hr 30 minutes, and then 30 minutes of cardial - broken down into alternating days of upper and lower body.

Congratulations on sticking to a fitness plan.  Your question sounds like one for Dr. Blaivas - I'll send it his way.

To answer your question, the L-Arginine that you are taking is most likely helping to lower your blood pressure. Nitric oxide synthases in your body breaks down the Arginine to produce intravenous nitric oxide gas, which dialate, or open, your blood vessels. It also improves blood flow. This indeed can help to improve blood pressure, since dialation is directly related to reduced blood pressure. Good luck!

the arginine is most likely the reason for your decline in blood pressure.  It's actually quite good for you, i take 1000 mg before workouts and 1000 mg right when i wake up.  it relaxes your blood vessels and lets blood flow more freely, because of the increase in nitric oxide.  it's safe too, because if your body has too much, you just pee it out.  so you're fine man, don't worry :)
