Renewing My Gym Membership or Setting Up a Home GYM..??

By dhieluscious Wednesday, November 14, 2007
Hello there.. It's nice to know that there are sites like this .. Well I am new here and let me first introduce myself.. I am Dhie 24, married with 2 kids Kiana and Dolly. I rescently resign to be a full time mom at the moment and to lessen the stress from work since its giving me excess lbs LOL.. Anyways I am having a hard time thinking which one will be better a Home Gym or just renewing my gym membership? well for the past 2 years my gym membership is just a waste since I am a workaholic and seldom go to the gym to work out and take advantage of the group exercises they have in the morning. To cope up with fitness and since when I start working I gained too much Cry So I invested some home equipments like exercise bench, mats, dumbells, Elliptical Bike and a stationary bike for cardio and I also have the manual treadmill LOL (I dont use that anymore..) These past few months I go to the gym regularly since I dont work anymore i have all the time in the world to go to the gym or just exercise at home.. Gym is just walking distance to where I live.. I already have in mind just to set up a Home Gym since I already invested some equipments I just have to buy the Home GYM which is on sale here in our country about $250 but then my GYM has a promo if I renew within this month it will be about $200 and that incudes aero, yoga, pilates for a year and unlimited Gym usage so right now I am really having a hard time thinking which one will be the best choice.. Well anybody who will read this might as well leave me some suggestions to help me decide.. My husband's suggestion is just renew the membership so that i have focus when i work out since if I am at home the kids are distracting me and in 2 years time we will be moving back to the US so the equipment will be stuck somewhere and he also said consider that as my ALONE TIME and the equipments i have just for back ups just incase i am lazy to go to the gym ..I still have 15 days to think so guys give me your Honest and Best suggestions..

I would say choose whichever environment you feel most comfortable working out in. The question to ask yourself is, where am I likely to have the most success? Working out at home, or working out at a gym?

Personally, I would renew the gym membership and use the home equipment as a backup for when you are feeling too tired to go to the gym but still want to fit in a short workout (you know, one of those better-than-nothing workouts!).

My gym is a 10-minute drive from my house, which is really not too bad. But it seems too far when all I want to do is a quick 20 minutes on the elliptical. An elliptical machine at home would be perfect for that.

Also, with a gym membership, you can use  the classes as a motivational tool and a way to meet people. Having exercise dates with other people at your gym can be a great way to keep up your level of commitment.

hi laurie thanks for the advise..You are absolutely right the environment of where u workout is a big help.. and i can concentrate more at the gym i tried it for 2 days just working out at home and my kids are just keep on calling me to ask something which distract me.. at least when I am at the gym i have 2hrs alone time just to work out and everytime i feel bored when i have nothing else to do at home.. I ran to the gym and just do cardio.. since its just few steps from my house.. Is there a way to check on other member's profile in here?? well i am just new on this site still learning how to navigate on this..   I've done both and prefer to exercise in the privacy of my home.  And it sounds like you have enough home gym equipment already.  Save the membership fee and exercise at home.  Walking with your kids is great exercise and bonding time spent with them.Big Smile

Hi Heather thanks for the advise. There are convenience when we workout at home i did that before and my kids where just 3 and a baby and well it went out well but right now.. Since they grew up already they distract me most of the time.. espescially when they are arguing about something.. heheh you know how kids are like.. I think I will just renew my gym membership i did an experimentation for 2 days and well working out at home will be nice but makes you lazy in a few mins but at the gym people around me inspires me to workout hard.. hehe but thanks anyways.. my kids uses my stuff too.. lol.. have a great day..

Dhie:

I would encourage you to sign up for the gym.  I have tried doing exercises at home, and found out it doesn't work as well for me as going to the gym. I am motivated by seeing other gym members, as well as knowing that I paid for a membership that I should use. Having paid for a membership is a big motivator for me. That, plus the different classes help me because personally I look for any excuse not to go, but I make myself go  faithfully 2 times a week. Good luck!

So far you have one vote for home, one for gym, and one for either! lol. Let me be the tie breaker.  Since you have had both home gym equipment going unused and gym memberships without much use, I think you'd do well with a program that gives you more support and incentives to keep it up (the hardes part for most of us!)  Consider finding a fun workout DVD that is associated with an online community of people doing the same thing. I can point you to some resources if you are interested.

Good luck!

Hi..

Being a lot older (66 ugh), and now looking back at what I should of done was this.  IF I could of afforded the cost of the equipment I would of bought it, and would of had my children become involved in my own 'private' time.

Going to the gym you spend lets say 1/2 hr. there working out, or you get up early before work to go to the gym, or you go to the gym after work when your tired and just wanting to get home and chill out.

IF you can wake up lets say 1/2hr. before your alarm, the children won't be up yet, or if they are, let them watch TV or a video during 'your time' so you can have 'your time' to work out.  Or, when you come home, lets say before dinner, tell your youngsters that "Mom needs some 'time out' all for herself, so I am going to work-out and I would appreciate you to give me this time, OK"?  Explain to your children that they are important to you, but you need to do this for yourself to make you stronger so you can play with them more and not feel so tired all the time.  Maybe ask them to set the timer for 1/2hr or even 1hr. (you decide the time) and let them be responsible enough to give you this 'time-out'.  They will feel more involved and know that you are there in the house in case you are needed in an emergency.

The children today understand so much more then years ago which is a good thing?.  Ask them for their help because you want to be stronger, prettier and doing all of this for them and Daddy.  I bet they will help you, expecially if you explain to them just what you need to do.

I know your children think their Mommy is the prettiest Mommy in the whole wide world!!  Wink  And, having them being involved will help you and them.

Good luck, and let us know how it all works out.
