The truth is ten minutes is better than nothing if that is all you can spare or all your body can handle. The CDC the government's principle agency for health and fitness recommends that all adults should accumulate at least 30 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity on five or more days of the week. The keyword is accumulate which is important. Exercise is accumulative, so you don't have to do it all at once. I also highly recommend interval training. Interval training is alternating between high intensity exercise with low intensity recovery periods like when you go really fast on your treadmill and then go slowly to recover, then go really fast and then slowly and you keep repeating this. It's highly effective especially if done for 20 - 30 minutes)
Back to accumulation, you don't have to do everything all at once, do your 10 - 15 minutes of interval cardio and then come back later on in the day or at another time and do some strength training which is vital to make sure you are building some muscle. Your goal is to make sure you get to the 30 minute accumulation of exercise in your day.
Greeneys, I promise If you do this 3-5 times per week, you will notice some great changes to your health and fitness. It's not alot, but it's something! You will really be suprised how what you are doing will add up to over time. Have you heard of the Leslie Sansone walk at home programs? They have worked wonders for me, lost 30 lbs. You can go at your own pace for as long as you feel comfortable and they really keep you motivated. Good luck, I know it's hard sometimes. I'm under chemo treatment right now and it's hard to do anything, but the walking seems to be the easiest.
God Bless, Kirsten
hello! great thoughts on a 10 minute work-out!
here is my take on exercise as a detoxifer..... (even in 10 minutes)
IF EXERCISE COULD BE PACKAGED IN A PILL IT WOULD BE THE SINGLE MOST PRESCIBED DRUG IN THE NATION
i believe Robert Butler wrote that!
I am going to cut and paste (down below) another favorite exercise mantra that i found online.....
here is how i fit "exercise" into my life!
i leave for work 30-60 minutes early.
so i am in my car EARLY FOR WORK but then i go to the local gymn ON MY WAY TO WORK!
so most days................
(as it seems i am always behind in time management!)
i get in only 30 minutes, 10 minutes elipitical, then 20 minutes weight training
(two sets each machine)
there are days i go for an hour and add more cardio (personally i have a hard time w/ cardio?! in a gym anyways?!
other days i get in 15 or twenty minutes at the gym BARELY enough time to really count!
BUT #1 it holds my rountine in place
( i call it keeping my parking place!)
#2 I REALLY DO FEEL a difference with even a short work-out
#3 i do this every other day and around the holidaze i cut out a few here and there BUT
#4 i just jump back in even if i miss a week
#5 oh yeah I run into the bathroom at work and wipe my armpits and then dress into my scrubs ( so my hygeine is good at work!)
last christmas the gym closed for a few days and it was not until march 23 (first day of spring) that i returned to my rountine!!! oh yes being human...i can loose my good habits easily...
so anyways here is the cut and paste from jon jordan!! I keep it posted on my refer so i gaze upon often to remind me of the
health benefits of exercise!!
take good care! lisa rose ^:^~

Robert Butler said that if exercise could be packaged in a pill it would be the single most prescribed drug in the nation. And judging from the billions of dollars American's spend on weight management drugs, weight loss products and quick fix weight loss solutions I would have to agree with him. Everyone wants to lose weight and be fit but few want to expend the effort. Many say time and energy are factors but I believe it's because they don't consider the real benefits of exercise.
Starting today I would like you to think of exercise not as a means to look great but as a way to feel great. While losing weight and looking better are certainly nice side effects and important, the real benefits have to do more with what's happening inside you rather than outside you.
Exercise Is the Ultimate Detoxifier - It enhances blood flow and circulation and speeds up the removal of toxins from your cells. Unfortunately, every day, your body is taking in millions of chemicals and toxins from water, the air, food, etc and even jet fuel from planes. These toxins get lodged in your cells. If you don't exercise and live a stationary lifestyle the toxins sit there and accumulate causing a host of illnesses and diseases. Exercise helps remove the toxins through enhanced blood flow and we eliminate these toxins primarily through the skin by sweating. So make sure you work up a sweat.
Exercise Is the Ultimate Energizer - When you exercise you enhance your blood flow and circulation throughout your body which brings more oxygen to the cells and increases your energy. The mitochondria in your cells need oxygen to make energy. Exercise = Energy.
Exercise Enhances Energy Flow - I'd like you to think of your body as a flowing river of energy... because it is. When you don't exercise your energy becomes stagnant. You become more like a lake of water rather than a river. When you exercise you become the flowing river and this enhances your health and vitality.
Exercise Enhances Happiness and Reduces Stress - When you exercise you produce more serotonin, dopamine and feel good endorphins that make you feel great and help you manage stress. Think of your daily walk as your anti-depressant for the day because it is.
So now the question is, Jon, what should I do to exercise? The answer: anything you want. Just do something every day. Walk, run, ride the bike, box, climb, hike, swim, etc. Keep it simple, make it fun and start with 10 Minutes if you are a beginner. (Talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise routine).
The important thing is to move your body and experience the real benefits of exercise. It won't happen from a pill but only in your desire to happy, healthy and alive with energy.
