I was diagnosed as a Type 2 diabetic approximately 2 1/2 years ago. I immediately began some drastic life style changes. I began a walking program and limited my calorie intake. I also added a strength training program 3 times per week for 20 minutes per session. I lost a considerable amount of weight initially.
I have continued to build my walking program and have continued my strength training program and progressed from 3 to 5 pound weights to 5 to 8 pound weights. My diet has relaxed somewhat, but I am still very careful about what I eat and I almost always stay between 1500 and 2000 calories per day. I am 5'6" and at my lowest point I weighed 150. I have gained about 20 pounds back and I am concerned. I continue to walk between 40 to 50 miles per week. I am at 3200 miles total for 25 months of walking. I did 1200 miles the first year and 1800 the second year and 200 in the last month.
I'm sure that some of the weight gain can be attributed to building muscle, but I'm concerned about my overall weight gain. My diabetic controls are all in excellent shape. My Hemoglobin A1c has consistently been under 6.0 for over two years. I am no longer taking any medications for my diabetes, but I do take blood pressure medication, thyroid medication and a statin to keep my cholesterol low. My triglycerides are also well controlled.
Can anyone suggest why it is so difficult for me to control my weight despite my current regimen? I am a 55 year old, post menopausal woman.
I have tried to increase my walking to running, but I do not seem to be able to do so for any significant time period. I walk very briskly at about 5 miles per hour.
