How good is Cross-Training?

I alternate my exercising between running and cross-training.  When I'm done running, I feel really accomplished because I can hear myself breathing heavily and I feel tired.  When I'm done cross-training (I usually do 2 sets of 5 exercises for arms, legs, and abs), I know I worked my muscles, but I feel less accomplished because I'm not "tired."  Is this true?  Is my cross-training actually helping me?
