Every day we see headlines about what exercise we should be doing and
what food plan we need to be following. It can be pretty overwhelming for anyone, especially someone new to fitness.
I get e-mails all the time from people wanting to know how they can get in shape. What plan should they do? Paleo? Crossfit? Running? My answer is always the same--find something you enjoy doing and do it. Health and fitness is not a quick fix and if you sign up for something that you do not enjoy, chances are you aren’t going to stick with it for the long haul. Consistency beats intensity every single time.
Here are 3 components to always include in your plan:
- Cardio: Whether it is Zumba or running, find something you enjoy that will elevate your heart rate and make you sweat. Aim for 30 minutes or more at least three times per week.
- Strength training: You must lift weights in order to build and maintain muscle mass. The more muscle mass you have, the more calories you burn while at rest. If you are unsure of how to get started with strength training, hire a trainer for one or two sessions to help you learn proper technique.
- Mindful eating: Write down everything you eat for a few days (or use an app) and keep track of your calories and fat intake. Chances are you already are aware of the big issues in your diet, but this gives you the ability to see how little things can add up. If you are cleaning your kids plates or taking just a few bites of this and that, it all adds up to extra calories and pounds. Focus on eating a lot of green vegetables and lean protein.
While a specific plan can give you the framework, ultimately the success is up to you and your choices.
