6 Ways To Stay Fit, Lean and Healthy During the Holidays

  • I have nicknamed December to "weight gain month" because it happens like clockwork every year. Most people will tack on between 4-8 pounds of fat during December which is more than any other month during the calendar year. I love the holiday season, it's such a great time of the year, but it can be challenging to stay on track when it comes to your health and fitness. So I want to give you my special guide on 6 ways to stay fit, lean and healthy during the Holidays.

     

    1.   Raise Your Standards

    9 out of 10 people expect to gain weight during the holidays and this is exactly what happens. Our negative expectations become our excuse to eat and drink like it's going out of style and to compound it, we also exercise less. As a result we gain weight and lots of it. So here is the message don't wait until January 1, make the decision now and resolve to raise your standards! Decide now to keep up with your fitness and nutrition regimen during this time of the year.

    2.   Plan Ahead

    Especially now, schedule your exercise appointments and keep them religiously. If you fail to plan, you plan to fail, so my advice to you is make your fitness and health a priority. Everyone's schedule can get very chaotic during the "holidaze" but planning is about looking into the future and trying to anticipate the road ahead. Here is one I like, if you are traveling, take your exercise DVDs with you.

     

    3.   Be a Portion Control Maestro

    Have your cake and eat it too, not just the entire thing. The glaring truth is we eat way too much. We were taught wrong; you are never supposed to eat until you are full. If you eat until you are full, you went too far and should have stopped 10 minutes ago. I also want to include alcohol in this discussion because moderation is key. Be wary of those fruity drinks because they are especially high in calories both from the alcohol and sugar content and they can be an equivalent to a few Big Macs.

     

    4. Start a new Fitness Family Tradition

    A family that exercises together stays together. We spend a lot of time with our families during this time of the year, so why not make this a family affair. You get two birds with one stone as you manage to get in some quality family time while working out. Involve everyone from grandma to the kids. The possibilities are endless. You can do an exercise DVD together, talk a brisk walk around the neighborhood or play some sports. Get creative and think of ways to have some fun and get some exercise in with your family.

     

    5.   Drink Water

    We take in more toxins during this time of year than any other time. We also exercise less, eat more junk food and drink less water. This becomes the perfect combination for you to get sick. Your body needs the water to detoxify, drink more water and help your body can get rid of those toxins.

     

    6.   Enjoy the holidays

    Health and Fitness is not about how miserable you can make yourself, so one day per week or 3 meals in a week let lose and enjoy yourself! Eat some of those foods you consider forbidden. Remember 1 -3 meals of forbidden foods in a given week will not derail your health and fitness regimen. The rest of the time though I expect you to make the best possible choices.
