I think one of the best things you could do for your health is to greatly reduce or totally remove sodas or pop from your list of preferred beverages. Sodas are the leading source for calories and a primary reason why there is an obesity epidemic in most countries.

ive been overweight my whole life. i was diagnosed with diabetes 15 years ago and at that time i switched to diet soda. i was a diet mountain dew drinker. i drank almost a 2 litre bottle a day. i thought it was ok to drink since it had no calories. within the last two years my weight dramatically increased and couldnt lose weight because i had an enormous craving for sweets especially at night. i saw a report about how diret soda and artificial sweeteners can cause cravings and three months ago quit drinking all diet drinks and fake sweeteners. i cannot believe it! ive lost 30 lbs in 3 months without even trying! i feel better and i have lost my cravings for sweets and food in general! all i drink now is water and plain green tea hot or iced with lemon. it has given me new hope that i may be able to lose enough weight without having weight loss surgery. please stop putting those artificial sweeteners in your body and try water instead it really works!

I agree --   about 3 years ago I decided to really buckle down and stick to a diet/exercise plan.  I lost 40 pounds in about 5 months and I have kept it off.

Step #1 -  I eliminated all sodas.  I had been a 3x day (minimum) 20oz regular Coke drinker.  After eliminating sodas, I lost 5 pounds in one week.  I have since added Diet coke back in, but luckily I don't like the taste so I don't overdo!

Try water -  it's really good once you get used to it.

    Try my diet -

no more than 20grams of fat a day (try to get some fat from fish, sardines, avocados so your skin isn't wrecked)

no more than 20 grams of sugar a day (cut out white sugar as much as possible)

Exercise like crazy (Tae-Bo for me)

I think maybe the worse thing diet colas do is keep you wanting that high level of sweet taste. We drink 1% milk all the time. If we should chance to have whole milk somewhere where there is no choice, we feel like we are drinking half and half. It's the comparsion. If you are accustomed to that high sweet taste everything you eat needs that level of sweetness. Same is true with sodium. If you eat without much salt than extra salt added to a salad or dish becomes very salty.

One needs to get rid of the taste of sweetness whether there are calories in it or not.

I gave up soda for lent and lost 16 pounds.  I didn't change any other habits.  Just gave up soda. It's that easy.
