Declaring War on Fat - How The Military Burns Body Fat

By Kenn Kihiu, Health Guide Wednesday, September 03, 2008

My Dad was in the army, but it still took me and the family by surprise when my oldest nephew DM (he is named after my Dad) enlisted with the Marines.  To be honest I was not sure he was going to make it.  I mean, it's the "The Few, The Proud, The Marines" who have the highest drop rate but DM graduated just last week with a higher rank than most of his peers from the Recruit Training Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina.

The Military is very efficient at transforming bodies in a relatively short time. The Marine Corps Boot camp lasted 13 weeks which saw DM add about 16 pounds of more lean muscle.  Interesting story, one of my nephew's closest friends was his bunk mate nicknamed "Porky" by the drill sergeant. This is obviously a swipe at the young mans weight but by the end of the boot camp, there was no more Porky, he was a different man with a different body.

Allow me to save you from the embarrassing nicknames and give you 3 reasons why the military's fitness program can be considered among the finest on the planet and how you can use these principles to create yourself a brand new body.

Training Is a MUST.

Training is indeed mandatory and it's not a suggestion.  This is what you will not hear at the Military bootcamps.

"I just don't feel like working out today"

"I have a headache"

"My dog ate my homework"

When training begins, you had better be standing in line or you find yourself scrubbing toilets with a toothbrush past midnight.

How do you apply this?  Well let me ask another question.  How commited are you to transforming your body?  Maybe it's time to take an honest look at the excuses you have made for not training in the past.  Is it time commitment?  My answer is you seriously only need to be consistent with a good 30 minutes of exercise.  Is it scheduling? then hit the gym on your way to work or back from work or during lunch.

Bottom line, stop making excuses and start finding a way to make it happen!

Train Early To Burn More Fat

PT "physical training" starts as early as 4am.  Training first thing in the morning will give your metabolism a jumpstart and shift your burning fat into high gear.  You don't have to enlist in the Marines or wake up at 4am.  All I'm asking is sleep a little early and wake up early to take advantage of getting your workout in as early as possible.  When you train early in the morning you speed up the process by taking advantage of your body's natural fat burning abilities because your metabolism slows down in the evening.

Train Often

Most military training is 6 days a week because this is what it takes to seriously transform your body in a very short period of time.  Most people will hit the gym for 1 week and begin complaining about not seeing results.  The military knows that It's not what you do once a while that determines your success it's what you do most of the time that will yield you results.
