how refreshing.......... with all the advertisement going on they make it sound like crunches are a thing of the past.(.bascially of no benefit). yet after reading your info. i realize why change a good thing...( I will keep on crunch) thanks  you

Sorry but this is all completely wrong.

And fyi, if you 'tighten' ur abs, and disengage your transverse abdominals, like you are saying, then THAT is what is taking the support away from your spine. Using the 6 pack for everything is unhelpful as it is just the outer abdominals. The important ones are the innermost ones (transverse abdominals) because they stabilse the spine. And to engage these ones, you DO need to draw your bellybutton in and up.
