9 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) scientists have written a letter to President-elect Barack Obama alleging that the FDA is badly mismanaged and "fundamentally broken."
Among their concerns is the assertion that FDA employees have been threatened and told to ignore FDA guidelines. The letter goes on to say "the scientific review process for medical devices at FDA has been corrupted and distorted by current FDA managers, thereby placing the American people at risk."
The letter came from scientists working in the FDA's Center for Devices and Radiological Health (CDRH). A similar letter from FDA employees went out to members of Congress in October 2008. You can read that letter here.
The FDA is responsible for the safety and regulation of most foods, medications, dietary supplements, vaccines, medical devices, cosmetics and radition-emitting devices. The agency operates under the United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
