What fun it was to visit the Martha's Vineyard Agriculture Fair last week! It was a terrific celebration of local agriculture at it's best. When was the last time that you went to the fair? Whether it is a big state fair or your county fair there is so much to do and so much to learn about the food and farms where you are. I remember going to the South Dakota State Fair years ago where my kids played with the prize winning cows.
It's also a time for farmers and cooks to show off, which can be very exciting. My daughter Lisa and I were tremendously impressed with the blue ribbon veggies that we saw. There were all kinds of heirloom tomatoes, summer squash, and corn that won prizes. We moved on to the many bakeoffs, and the winning pies, and cookies and bread just looked so delicious. I wish I had gotten some new recipes from the families that were there!
Annie Somerville, the Executive Chef of Greens Restaurant in San Francisco has found many ways to celebrate the local fruits and vegetables she finds in her area. Here is a favorite recipe that is perfect to take to your summer picnic this weekend.
