  • So you had a baby... or two.... or three... and you've got some baby weight going on. And your last baby was born in 1995. Things are starting to droop, sag, wrinkle and everything seems so hard. Work-out? Eat healthy? C'mon now, it is all you can do to just fall into bed at midnight, having taken care of EVERYONE ELSE all day long. I know the story-I have a chapter or two in that book myself.

     

    But Mom, there is good reason flight attendants tell you to put the oxygen mask on yourself first before helping others. If you do not put your own care first, there is no way you will be able to effectively take care of those around you.

    The "Mommy Makeover (From Within)" to me is making positive changes that result in a healthier, happier you, enabling you to live your very best life. You feel better, function better, live better and ultimately look better.

     

    In my opinion, the best makeovers are always the ones created through your own efforts with nature's assistance. The quick and synthetic fixes always seem to be unsatisfying and never last, often initiating a negative and never-ending cycle.

     

    I have a very simple 7 step plan to jumpstart the best and most sustainable makeover program and dads, grandparents and siblings can do it too!

     

    1. Sleep

     

    Studies have consistently shown that those getting less than 7 or so hours a night tend to weigh more, have harder times losing weight, be more stressed with poorer control of emotions and get sick more often.

     

    2. Eat right

     

    A balanced diet rich in foods such as whole-grains, fruits and vegetables, fatty fish and nuts is not only good for your weight and energy levels, it is also full of necessary nutrients and antioxidants which help slow down the aging process.

     

    3. Get up and move

     

    We all know how important exercise is for achieving and maintaining a healthy weight. It is also just as important for getting us the energy we need to live our busy lives to the fullest. When you feel too tired to get off the couch at 4:00 pm, get up and dance or take a brisk walk around the block with your kids. You will feel an immediate energy boost and you will look and feel great.

     

    4. Hydrate

     

    Our bodies are about 60-70 percent water. We need to hydrate throughout the day to make sure our bodies are running at full speed. And keep in mind that our skin is our bodies' largest organ...makes sense that hydrating from within can help with its optimal functioning and appearance.

     

    5. Breathe

     

    Oxygen is the essence of our life force: without it, we perish. Take time to slow down and really breathe it in. Deep breaths in and out, several times a day. Inhaling, imagine this oxygen reaching every cell within your body providing much needed nourishment. While breathing out, imagine releasing the toxins that you no longer need nor want.

     

    6. Reflect

     

    Life is fast and it is not going to slow down anytime soon. To flourish, you must take time out to reflect and reconnect with yourself. Whether this means taking a yoga class, meditating for 15 minutes each day or simply relaxing with a cup of green tea and an uplifting read, take this time to reset your clock.

    7. Contribute

     

    Helping others and working hard is one of the best ways I can think of to really bring out true beauty. Do this and do what inspires you. Take the focus off the superficial and the superficial will be less focused on you.
