  • In a staggering show of skill and precision, Evan Lysacek became the first American to win Olympic gold in men's figure skating since Brian Boitano in the 1988 Calgary games and ending Russia's dominance on the podium since 1992.

Illinois-born Lysacek's performance earned him 257.67 points over Russia's Yevgeny Plushenko's 256.36. Joining Lysacek and Plushenko on the podium stand was Japan's Daisuke Takahashi who took bronze with 247.23 point.

Meanwhile, U.S. skier Lindsay Vonn suffered a crash in Thursday's slalom portion of the women's super combined, leaving room for Germany's Maria Riesch to clinch gold.
