I was only diagnosed a few months ago and I just happened to pick up a book by Gretchen Becker which really helped me - "The first year". From that book I found that there wasn't a good diabetic diet for everyone. There are many different types of diabetes and each one is helped by a different diet. I cut out as many carbs as I could and I lost a stone which has to be good for the diabetes and the heart problems etc which come along with the diabetes. But the recommended diabetic diet here in the UK is to load up with carbs.
My advice is to read as much as you can - get David Mendoza's newsletter and Gretchen's book and bother your doctor as often as possible so you get the best care possible.
Also more exercise. This isn't going so well with me but I have it on my list of things to do!

You also need to see a dietician to get a daily food allowance for your weight, height and other health factors. You also need to keep a food journal as well as a blood sugar journal to let you know which foods have an averse affect on it.

Eat whole grain spagetti noodles. Limit white sugar products. Track your carbs for a week and work to reduce the grams of carbs you consume. Excercise some.

My diabetes Type 2 is under good control; my fasting glucoses is most always between 125 -- 140. I acheive this control by limiting my diet to meat, poultry, lots of vegetables, and about 1 fruit per day. I rarely eat bread nor baked goods and never eat dessert. I usually drink 1 beer per day; I sweeten tea or coffee with Sweet n Low and never use regular granulated sugar. I hope these suggestions help you.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabeties last May. I have been able to control my glucose with diet and exercise. I follow a low carbohydrate diet and exercise 6 days a week. My exercise is on the stairmaster for 35-45 minutes 6 days a week. Eat nothing that is white. No white breads; no pasta or rice and very little if anything that has sugar in it. And I test my glucose every morning. One tip I have discovered and will pass along; beware of salad dressings. Most of them contain sugar. I use sugar free salad dressings at home and have vingar and oil when eating in restaurants.

You can control and even reverse this if you eliminate grains, starch and sugar from your diet. No, you can not eat spaghetti, or pasta. Maybe one noodle very rarely. Please read Dr. Bernstein. He advocates more exercise than I am currently fitting in, but I plan to get there. I've got an A1c of 5.2 by following no grains, no starch, and no sugar. You'll fall in love with celery, use romaine as bread for your sandwich. Try spaghetti squash instead of grain pasta. Best wishes.

The answer is that you need to find out what works best for you. You can achieve that by testing, testing ,testing! Always know your blood sugar reading and take it 60 to 90 minutes after a certain food to see how it affects your blood sugar. There is no hard and fast rule on carbs...each person is different! The right number of carbs for me will be different than the right number for you.
Switching to whole grain carb foods will be helpful to you and your health, than I can highly recommend!
Do as much research as you can...there are alot of websites and books that offer good information and support. Good luck!

I have been a type 2 diabetic for a couple of years and it was so hard for me because of the love of breads and sweets. I cut back on the breads a lot and sweets. I treat myself once in a while with dessert. My H1Ac was 6.0 and the Doctor said keep up the good work. I also lost 24 pounds and down 2 dress sizes. I am trying to get back started with working out. The others are correct about the working out thing it helps lower blood sugar and good for the heart. So my goal is to get totally off the pill and work out every day even if it's only 15-30 mins. I do believe with proper diet and working out is the best way to reverse it. Don't stress yourself out and cut back with little things. Important to write everything down, this will give you ideas on the things that work.
Good Luck!!

Go to this link and read it: http://ezinearticles.com/?Food-for-Diabetics---Good-and-Bad-Food-for-Diabetics&id=730988 . I agree with what they say on it and stand by it. I even eat a bit of spaghetti myself, but not to much. It's usually a small bowl type serving. Spaghetti is a starch which has carbs and that makes sugar so you have to be careful with that type of food. Do your own research in finding different types of diabetic recipes. They're very good. Also if you drink coffee, eat cereal, or soft drinks you have to adjust your taste buds to the splendas or nutrasweet products. No sugary drinking! Good luck with your diabetes. It's not the end of the world, but it does have options.

you must go to dietition. when you are diabetic you must decrease your calorie intake beacause this action decrease your blood sugar even if it cant decrease your body weight and you will restrict in all of high glycemic index foods such as some fruits but you are free in vegetables except carrot and baked beet. you must eat sufficient dietary fiber (25 -30 g per day).

Eat wheat spagetti if you feel you just have to have pasta. But what you really need to do is to have your doctor refer you to a licensed dietician before you do ANYTHING. There's no one blanket answer to your question because your present physical condition, weight, blood sugar numbers, cholesterol numbers and other factors (such as the condition of your heart, or any organ damage you may have suffered) will go into deciding what you should and shouldn't eat. But whatever you do, take this diabetes thing extremely seriously NOW. Your life depends on it. This thing kills one organ at a time. I watched my father die of it.
The best thing you can do for yourself, if you haven't already, is join a gym and go EVERY SINGLE DAY. I know it can be pricey, but isn't your life worth $30 a month? Don't just go...do the work and follow the diet. Get a personal trainer if you have to. Exercise and eating right is literally the only way out of this nightmare. It's the only way to make your body even come close to working right again. You HAVE to work out. If you're not used to it, start small and work your way up. Walk around the block for 30 minutes a day if that's all you can do. Take your sugar before and after you walk and you'll see what a difference it makes.
Most of all, be sure to set goals and reward yourself royally when you meet them. When you've met your goals, set all new goals. Remember, you're creating a new lifestyle for yourself. This is how you have to live from now on...healthy and in control.
