I was only diagnosed a few months ago and I just happened to pick up a book by Gretchen Becker which really helped me - "The first year". From that book I found that there wasn't a good diabetic diet for everyone. There are many different types of diabetes and each one is helped by a different diet. I cut out as many carbs as I could and I lost a stone which has to be good for the diabetes and the heart problems etc which come along with the diabetes. But the recommended diabetic diet here in the UK is to load up with carbs.
My advice is to read as much as you can - get David Mendoza's newsletter and Gretchen's book and bother your doctor as often as possible so you get the best care possible.
Also more exercise. This isn't going so well with me but I have it on my list of things to do!
