Menstruation while swimming, does your period stop?

I've been told since I was a young girl just starting my period,(I'm know 45), that your period stops when you swim and that it is OK to go swimming with no pad or tampon. I don't believe it. Please help clarify.

No, this is not true.  Please use a tampon (not a pad).
