There are several articles here on this site about the bpa, but I don't really want to throw all my plastic away and go buy stainless steel bottle only to find out that later that 1 mouse died from spending his entire life in a Kleencanteen. What are the real harmful effects, especially if it is not heated?

Im not sure which articles you've read but here are some more. In the end, it is up to you to decide what you think is safe and not safe. There is no telling what studies will show in the future.
