Q: How can I strengthen my neck muscles?

I recently pulled a neck muscle and I don't know what I did. The pain and spasms are excrutiating and I don't want to relive this experience.  I exercise regularly and think I might have ignored a particular exercise that can help.  How can I strengthen my neck muscles to avoid future injury?

First i would tend to the injury and by that i mean keeping the area isolated - not doing any sudden movements or straining the nearby muscles in my trapezoids.  i'd ice down after exercising sine you will still incidentally stress the neck area with any shoulder or upper arm movements.


To strengthen the neck muscles you can do shoulder shrugs and when ou do crunches you can intermittently remove the supporting hands from behind your head, allowing the neck muscles to support your head.  Increase "unsupported" intervals.
