Hi Amanda, Sorry to hear about your Mom and her hip replacement. First you need the help of a medical professional to determine the range of motion of your hips. Talk to your doctor and they can talk about exercises that you can do.  For some good ones go to the link http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/orthopaedics/hipexer.cfm but first check with the physician.   If your Mom is over 100 pounds overweight I suspect she has not been deligent about her diet and exercise.  The easiest thing to start with is nutrition.  Reduce or totally stop drinking sodas also Click here to use the calorie calculator to estimate the number of daily calories the body needs to lose weight) But reduction in calories is not enough.  You actually want her eat MORE of the right foods and usually the problem is most people eat too much of the wrong foods (junk, highly processed and devoid of nutrition) and not enough of the right foods.  The right foots are whole type foods that are nutrient dense.  These foods have not been processed or not overly-processed.  The right foods are packaged by nature and not by the factory, which means you want to eat more of the foods that you can wash and eat such as fruits and vegetables and less of the foods that come in the boxes. Wishing You all the best.   Move Your Body, Move Your Life Kenn Kihiu http://www.dancexfitness.com
