Dieting means deprivation but understanding portions, eating when hungry and knowing which are the superstars of each food group as well as how many calories you need daily to lose or maintain weight is BEING HEALTHY.  I'd get a good book - mine is Fat Families Thin Families and learn about nutrition and change habits slowly.  I;d also start a walking program immediately and over say 3-4  months - work up to an hour walk 5-6 days a week.  If your pleased with progress - I'd add in weight training and treat myself to some personal training sessions.  You do need to understand nutrition and exercise even if you avoid the dieting trap.
