How beneficial is walking on a treadmill if you have to hold on to the rails?

I am in my 60's and walked outside for years until I started having trouble with my back and pain in my hips.  I can walk on the treadmill but holding on to the rails helps ease the pain.......Am I doing myself any good or just wasting my time?
