Hi Jane,   The "apple shape" is linked with more health problems, such as increased heart disease risk.  Ideally, your waist circumference should be 34 or less.  May seem a little daunting and impossible right now, but one step at a time and you can start shrinking your waistline and lower the risk.   All the best, Lisa Nelson, RD, LN Lose Weight
