Q: How much calcium should a couple over 50 be getting daily? My husband has hypothyroidism.

My husband has very intense muscle cramps throughout his body. Sometimes in the middle of the night he will get them and of course after he has worked outside or sweated from a lot of heat or exertion. His potassium levels are good and they are checking his magnesium and lipids in a few days. We take 1000 mg of Calcium with 800 I.U. of D and 80 mcg. of K.

At age 50 you could begin to go up to 1200 mg (still in divided doses of no more than 500 mgs in each dose), though 1000mgs is sufficient with the other supporting vitamins/minerals.  The cramps do need to be dealt with and if they are not related to a magnesium deficiency and if your husband is given adequate syntheroid doses to balance out the deficiency then they'll need to look at other causes of the cramps.
